The Basin System Status Index (Índice de Estado del Sistema Cuenca) is a statistical normalization of an absolute indicator of the hydrological status of the Basin. It monitors not meteorological but rather hydrological drought, taking into account two factors: added inputs for the last 12 months into the reservoirs system and stored volume at the reservoir system. Because the system has limited storage capacity, the weight of added inputs is set at 2/3 of the absolute indicator, while stored volume only amounts to 1/3. The minimum recorded value for the absolute indicator is around 101, while the historical maximum was set at 767, with the mean value being 286. In order to make these gross values comparable to different basins within Spain, with different sizes, rainfall and infrastructures, we perform a statistical operation that renders the value of the index ranging from 0 to 1. The formula for calculating the value of the index depends on whether the indicator for a given month is above or under the mean value. If it is above (or equal to), the index is 1/2[1+ (Indicator-mean)(maximum-mean)]. On the other hand, when the value of the indicator is smaller than the mean, the index is (indicator-minimum)/2(mean-minimum).
